Believe it or not, work has already begun on the Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada that will be located at the base of the CN Tower.

The 12,500-square-metre aquarium will contain 5.7 million litres of water, 450 different species, and feature over 13,500 underwater inhabitants from around the world.

“The Toronto aquarium will be considerably large; even though it has a small footprint at the base of the CN Tower, we have managed to put a lot of exhibitory in this small space,” said Joseph Choromanski, Vice President of animal husbandry at Ripley Entertainment.

The aquarium will contain species from all around the world and feature an exhibit of species from around Canada.

“Similar to the cultural diversity within Toronto itself, we are going to have a diverse animal collection with fishes and invertebrate from all around the world as well as Canada,” said Choromanski.

Homage will be paid to Canada’s tropical prehistoric times in informational material and possibly through fossil moldings.

The whole experience from beginning to end will be educational and every exhibit will be interactive.

“Beyond the visitor experience we will have a formal educational program associated with our discovery centre and we have two classrooms for school groups in our building as well,” Choromanski said.

One of the highlights of the aquarium is a 96-metre-long shark tank tunnel, known as the “Shark Lagoon,” featuring different species of sharks including sand tiger sharks and largetooth sawfish.

This project will also create hundreds of jobs during the construction as well as post construction.

All three levels of government are partnering with Ripley Entertainment in the development of the aquarium.

The government of Ontario is investing $11 million in the construction of the aquarium and the City of Toronto is providing property tax incentives for a period of 12 years.

A federal Crown corporation is also investing $10 million to improve access to the aquarium.

The aquarium is projected to draw in about 2 million people annually and the doors are expected to open in July 2013.
