Conservative MP Ryan Williams has alleged that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau lied under oath when asked about his previous comments on unvaccinated Canadians while testifying at the public inquiry into the federal government’s use of the Emergencies Act.

“It is never ok to lie. It is never ok to lie under oath. It is never ok for a Prime Minister to divide the very country he represents,” Williams wrote in a Twitter post on Nov. 28.

“If there ever was a time for an apology—it is now. We need unity more than ever.”

Trudeau was asked during his testimony before the Public Order Emergency Commission (POEC) on Nov. 25 about previous comments he made concerning unvaccinated people during an interview on a Quebec TV station in Sept. 2021.

“We are going to end this pandemic with vaccination,” Trudeau said during the interview. “We know people who are a little hesitant, who can be convinced, but also people who are fiercely opposed to vaccination, who do not believe in science, who are often misogynistic, often are racist.”

He added, “There are not many of them, but they take up a lot of space. As a leader, as a country, do we tolerate these people, or do we say come on?”

Freedom Corp counsel Eva Chipiuk asked Trudeau about the comments during the POEC hearings on Nov. 25.

“A number of people have testified in this inquiry referencing your widely-published comments calling the unvaccinated racist and misogynist,” she said.

“Would you agree with me that one of the most important roles of a prime minister is to unite Canadians and not divide them by engaging in name-calling?”

Trudeau replied, “I did not call people who are unvaccinated names.”

“I highlighted there is a difference between people who are hesitant to get vaccinated for any range of reasons and people who deliberately spread misinformation that puts at risk the life and health of their fellow Canadians.”

The POEC concluded its public hearings last week and began its policy phase of work on Nov. 28. It will table its final report in the House of Commons and the Senate by Feb. 20, 2023.
