UFC champion Conor McGregor paid tribute to Muhammad Ali on social media, borrowing a line from the movie “Reservoir Dogs” (“You better wake up and apologize” is a quote from the movie McGregor played on).

McGregor has been often compared to Ali, but has always modestly brushed off the compliments as excessive.

“If you think throughout the history of the fight game the two guys that you’ve ever seen that were just absolutely world class at the mental warfare game it’s Muhammad Ali and Conor McGregor,” UFC president Dana White said in December, according to Fox Sports.

McGregor declined the comparisons to Ali, whom he reveres as his earliest influence.

“Thank you for that compliment. … It’s a comparison that’s been thrown at me a few times but I cannot accept a comparison like that,” McGregor said. “For me, obviously, Muhammad Ali was probably my first combat sports star that I looked up to.”

McGregor said he was flattered to see the comparison made.

“Muhammad Ali’s a special man, he’s done things that are unthinkable. He changed culture, period,” McGregor said. “I am honored to even be put into that bracket by some people, so thank you.”
