Police in Casa Grande, Arizona say that Connie Villa, 35, killed her 13-year-old daughter and stabbed her ex-husband on Christmas day.

The daughter, Aniarael Macias, died. The ex-husband, Adam Villa, 33, escaped the house and drove himself to the hospital, calling police on the way.

Police officers responding to the Colony Apartments found Connie Villa and the rest of her four children—ages 3, 5 and 8—who were not stabbed.

Villa also had been stabbed and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Villa was trying to kill her whole family but didn’t succeed, police are saying, reported the Arizona Republic.

But Aniarael, the dead teen, didn’t have any apparent injuries and her cause of death isn’t yet known. Results for toxicology tests on the four children could take up to three weeks.

Michael Macias, the father of Aniarael, said in a statement: ““We request that the focus of this tragedy be a celebration of our precious Ania’s life. She was a gentle, kind and beautiful spirit who was taken from us much too soon. Michael and his family are heartbroken. Ania was always smiling. She loved her brothers and sisters.”

Villa has been charged with first-degree murder and four counts of attempted first-degree murder. Additional charges may come later.
