Congress will return next Tuesday for a short stint before election season. The 111th Congress has been a busy session, passing major reforms of health care and the financial sector. But a lot of bills passed by the House are still waiting for Senate action. House Democrats say they passed 300 bills that now sit in the Senate, waiting. According to The Hill, leaders in the Senate say House members don’t understand how the Senate operates.

In a statement issued in early summer, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi blamed the gridlock on Senate Republicans.

“The House has repeatedly sent jobs-creating bills to the Senate since December—Build America Bonds, small-business hiring incentives, and importantly, summer jobs—and yet Republicans continue to block approval of jobs legislation,” said Pelosi in a statement.

With the election less than two months away neither side will be interested in tackling divisive topics like energy and immigration. But for liberals, time is running out. The election is likely to leave Democrats with slimmer majorities in both Houses, making contentious legislation more difficult to pass next session.
