HONOLULU—Shen Yun Performing Arts was “an extravaganza” for Jerry and Lallie Sinay, who saw the performance for the first time at the Neal S. Blaisdell Concert Hall in Honolulu during the May 4 matinee.

“I enjoyed it immensely, the colors of the costumes were just glorious. The dancing was exquisite. Can’t wait to see it next year!” Mrs. Sinay said.

“I thought the dancers were just marvelous,” said Mr. Sinay, who owns an insurance business. “It was just wonderful dance, and I love the orchestration.”

Mr. Sinay, whose mother was a concert pianist, has a musical background himself, and said he could tell that the instrumentation of the Shen Yun Orchestra was unique.

“Oh, I could hear every instrument separately,” he said. “I knew the sounds were different.”

Traditional Chinese instruments like the two-stringed erhu and woodwind suona carry the melody while a Western philharmonic orchestra comprises the foundation of the ensemble, creating a truly new sound.

“We really enjoyed it,” Mr. Sinay said.

Mrs. Sinay added that another unique feature of Shen Yun struck her: “the temples and the background—wow!”

Scenes from ancient legends, heavenly palaces, and views across China are projected onto Shen Yun’s animated backdrop, creating a colorful experience.

“We truly enjoyed it, and the [backdrop] was incredible.” Mrs. Sinay said.
