The 2014 Commonwealth Games are almost over and some fans are looking for information regarding the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The next games are in fact scheduled to take place in Australia, specifically Gold Coast City in Queensland.

The winning bid was announced back in November 2011.

The 2018 Games will take place earlier in the year--as opposed to the July and August dates for the 2014 Games, the next Games will take place from April 4 through April 15.

Venues include the Gold Coast Football Stadium for Rugby 7s, the Cairns Convention Centre for Men’s Basketball, and the Carrara Stadium for the Opening Ceremony, the Closing Ceremony, and Athletics.

Transportation between venues will be available through vehicles and also the new light rail system, which just opened in July 2014.

Many of the sports in the next Games will be the same--however, Judo will no longer be a part of the competition, while Basketball is being reintroduced.

It will be the fifth time out of 21 Games that Australia has been the host. “

The Gold Coast will welcome athletes, officials and visitors from all over the world, with open arms and warm hearts. The focus will be on the athletes, with the world’s best showcased in the pursuit of international sporting excellence. The competition will be passionate and fiercely competitive, but conducted in a fun and friendly environment,” according to the Games website.

“The teams, friends and families will be made to feel right at home by 15,000 of our finest and most dedicated volunteers, and a community intent on delivering a great and memorable Commonwealth Games. From winning that highly sought after gold medal, to sharing the limelight in the Opening Ceremony with the world’s greatest athletes, or holding your sporting heroes shoes while they compete… It will be an event where anything is possible.”

The official schedule isn’t out yet; it should be formalized much closer to the dates.
