As part of the Presidential Summit on Entrepreneurship, the Department of State announced a new partnership with a group of Americans under the name of Partners for a New Beginning (PNB) who will put forward programs between the United States and Muslim-majority countries.

“Partners for a New Beginning will tap into the dynamism and innovation of U.S. industry in a number of ways—for example, by encouraging companies to contribute equipment or technology to the Centers of Scientific Excellence we are developing overseas, or by facilitating partnerships between universities here and those abroad to share knowledge and improve business education,” said Secretary Hilary Clinton in Tuesday’s announcement.

Introduced by Clinton, the PNB leaders include former Secretary of State Madeline Albright, Walter Isaacson, President and CEO of the Aspen Institute, and Coca-Cola Chairman and CEO Muhtar Kent.

The partnership is part of President Obama’s continuous effort to improve U.S. relations with the Muslim world. Last summer in Cairo, he promised to create a group of business volunteers and host a Summit on Entrepreneurship.

“On economic development, we will create a new corps of business volunteers to partner with counterparts in Muslim-majority countries. And I will host a Summit on Entrepreneurship this year to identify how we can deepen ties between business leaders, foundations and social entrepreneurs in the United States and Muslim communities around the world,” said Obama at the University of Cario last June.

Almost a year later, over 250 entrepreneurs from more than 50 countries arrived in Washington, D.C.

Secretary Clinton also said Tuesday that PNB will work to encourage U.S. investors and mentors to recognize that Muslim-majority communities house a lot of potential and have a lot of entrepreneurs who work in an environment where it is difficult to achieve their goals.

According to the announcement, much of the Middle East, despite the talented people it possesses, experiences slow growth. The partnership with PNB treats it as a top priority to unleash the potential of the majority Muslim countries.
