LOS ANGELES—An excited audience welcomed Shen Yun Performing Arts at a sold-out performance at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, in Los Angeles, on Friday, Jan. 13.

A New York-based performance company, Shen Yun is dedicated to restoring and reviving traditional Chinese culture, according to the company’s website. Using classical Chinese dance, original scores combining Western and Chinese classical instruments, and heart felt songs, Shen Yun takes the audience on a journey through China’s 5,000-year-old culture.

At the theater on Friday evening was Ingrid Mueller, a classical Egyptian dancer, who enjoyed the various aspects of the performance.

“Oh, I’m very impressed. It’s beautiful, and it’s graceful, and beautiful colors,” Ms. Mueller said.

“And the dancers are fantastic and the music is wonderful. It’s just a fantastic show. I can’t say more about it. It was really beautiful.”

Classical Chinese dance has three main components, bearing, form and technical skill along with a systematic training in posture and movement that includes very difficult jumping and tumbling techniques, says the company’s website.

Ms. Mueller said of the dancers: “Oh, they’re perfectionists, everything is on cue. It’s just fantastic. Really, really beautiful. I don’t know what to say, it’s really wonderful.

“They’re all together when they dance, they’re very precise. ... They have beautiful expressions in their face. The girls are very graceful and delicate and the men are strong and move very well. It’s excellent.”

Ms. Mueller explained how much she appreciated the cultural aspect of the performance. “That’s what I like, the cultural part, because I love to see different dances of the world. And this is something very special ... I like dances that are feminine and graceful, and I see the female dancers like that.

“I'd like everyone to see the show, because it’s something that is very unique and very special,” she said.
