October is a busy month for architecture and design around New York City; a combination of building tours, seminars, exhibitions, and interactive programs are open to the public.

Last Saturday, Oct. 17, the building at 20 West 44th St, home to The Institute of Classical Architecture & Art and the General Society of Mechanics & Tradesmen was open to the public.

Guests were illuminated by the history of the building, designed in 1891. With later renovations the building now boasts a blend of monumental Beaux Arts Classicism with Renaissance elements.

This tour and others like it are part of the Archtober program from the American Institute of Architects AIA, in collaboration with Open House New York (OHNY) and various design related institutions to promote design awareness for the general public and bring the design community together in New York. James Howard Smith, an architectural photographer, designer, and founder of Cartio, aims to inspire an appreciation of classic architecture.
