The city is asking Toronto residents to hold off on putting their Christmas trees out for garbage collection until January.

“Natural Christmas trees are collected in January on residents’ scheduled garbage collection day,” reads a statement on the city’s website.

“These trees are collected by separate trucks, shredded, and made into finished compost.”

Because the trees are composted, they should not be in bags and should be free of tinsel, ornaments, stands, and other objects. The city also asks that any snow and ice are cleared so that trees are easily accessible for collection.

If the tree is not collected in January, it must be either brought to a drop-off depot or saved to be picked up as yard waste in March. Residents should call 311 to report a missed Christmas tree collection.

The city collects about 100,000 trees on average each year.
