City officials announced that The Leak Notification Program, which includes installation of digital meter readers that detect and notify homeowners of potential water leaks before the cost rises, is set to launch. During the program’s trial period in December, more than 1,300 notifications were made, helping New Yorkers save hundreds of thousand dollars. The digital wireless meter readers are being installed at 835,000 locations around the city.

“By applying the most up-to-date technology to one of our oldest and most basic city services, we can ensure homeowners prevent hundreds or even thousands of dollars from going down the drain,” said Mayor Michael Bloomberg in a statement.

Homeowners who wish to receive leak alerts should register their contact information at the city government’s official website, NYC.gov.
