TAOYUAN, Taiwan—Shen Yun Performing Arts Touring Company drew many fans, once again, to the Taoyuan County Performing Arts Center on the afternoon of March 27.
Among them was Chen Chi-yuan, Hsinchu city councilor, seeing Shen Yun for the first time. Deeply touched by the opening program Descending to the World, he felt like he was one of the gods descending to the world as acted out in the program.
And the performance as a whole, meant to revive 5,000 years of divinely inspired Chinese culture, connected with him.
“Shen Yun is touring the world, and spreading something righteous to every corner of the world,” he said. “It is indeed very touching.”
Shen Yun, based in New York, travels around the world to more than 100 cities each year, putting on a performance that starts with classical Chinese dance and adds digital backdrops, handmade costumes, and an orchestra that melds East and West.
Yet the aspects of Shen Yun that most stand out to audience members is often the nature of the dances, which draw from legends, myths, and ethnicities from across China’s vast lands and lore.
Mr. Chen expressed that as a city councilor he follows the course of nature and does what he is supposed to do. In line with that thinking, he said that human beings are supposed to be positive, and should have positive influences, namely, “righteous perspective, righteous thoughts, and righteous enlightenments.”
Shen Yun fits the bill, impacting audience members in a positive way, having “strong humane and artistic connotations.”
After saying every single dance piece was very wonderful, Mr. Chen said the performance was “an artistic feast.”
Mr. Chen paid close attention to every detail of the performance, including the costumes and the performers’ movements.
“The dancers made good use of their body language to express their feelings,” he said. “The costumes were exquisitely designed and perfectly arranged. As to Shen Yun Performing Arts Orchestra, it seamlessly blended Eastern and Western musical instruments, in which Western instruments’ seven-tone scale was perfectly harmonized with traditional Chinese instruments’ five-tone scale. It is indeed amazing.”
