NEW YORK—City Council voted on Wednesday to oppose a 2010 Supreme Court decision that prohibited the government from limiting corporate and union spending for political purposes. The decision held that the First Amendment protects corporations and unions just as it does people. Members of the City Council Progressive Caucus Brad Lander, Melissa Mark-Viverito and Steve Levin sponsored the resolution, with the entirety of the caucus as co-sponsors.

“We believe that corporations should not share the same rights as people, that unlimited and unreported corporate donations meant to sway the electoral process should not be considered freedom of speech, and that the government should regulate the raising and spending of money by corporations intended to influence elections,” reads a press statement from the Progressive Caucus.

The Citizens United case arose from a dispute over the airing of a film critical of Hillary Clinton.
