COSTA MESA, Calif.  — Fire tore through a 96-foot-tall Christmas tree outside a Southern California hotel, sending a bright chute of flames and then smoke into the air.

A giant Christmas tree is engulfed in flames outside the the Westin South Coast Plaza hotel in Costa Mesa, Calif. on Monday, Dec. 14, 2015. The fire destroyed the 96-foot-tall Christmas tree. The cause is under investigation. (David Songer via AP)
