Chris Christie was sworn in as New Jersey’s 55th governor on Tuesday, the first Republican governor of the state in eight years.

Christie, who was sworn in at the Sacred Heart Church in Philadelphia, addressed the crowd at the War Memorial Building later in Trenton, New Jersey, expressing his forthcoming efforts to do right for all New Jersey citizens.

“Young or old, Republican or Democrat, rich or poor, regardless of color or heritage—I promise you this: I will work every waking hour of every day for a better life for all of our citizens,” said Gov. Christie.

“To Governor Corzine, I thank you for your decade of service to the nation and to the people of New Jersey. Your focus on the health of our children is something for which many New Jerseyans will long be grateful,” he added.

Despite his thanks to former Gov. Corzine, Christie addressed the current state of New Jersey, indirectly eluding to the policies from the preceding democratic governors.

“The era of runaway spending and higher and higher taxes has not worked. We have the largest budget deficit per person of any state in the union. We have the highest tax rates in the nation. We have the highest unemployment rate in over a quarter century. Our economy is stagnant and our people are suffering under the burden government has placed on them.”

Christie, who was born in Newark, has been a lifelong New Jersey resident. He currently resides in Mendham, New Jersey.
