Almost all new fences look wonderful when they are first installed, especially a beautiful wooden fence. However, after a year or more in the elements, many begin to appear worn and haggard, detracting from the value of your property. Before installing a new fence, take into consideration the maintenance that is required to keep your fence looking like new. This is one reason people typically call a fence contractor to help them understand how to properly install a fence and maintain it, says Wes Tolbert of West Florida Fence in Tampa Bay, Florida.

Low Maintenance Fence Options

While many people enjoy the beauty of a wood fence, it is not always the easiest fence to maintain. To keep wood from becoming gray or discolored in the outdoors, it must be consistently stained or painted to protect the wood. If you are willing to do the maintenance to keep it protected from the weather, you can have a wooden fence that will be beautiful and last for many years. However, if you want a fence with less annual maintenance, consider these other options.

  • Vinyl panels. For the same look of a wood fence, without the constant maintenance, vinyl panels may be the right option for your home or business. Vinyl fencing comes in a variety of options that can emulate wooden fencing, such as pickets, ranch rails or standard planks. Vinyl is durable, easy to clean and resistant to discoloring.

  • Chain link. Although chain link is not considered one of the more attractive fences, it is affordable and durable with very little maintenance required. If security or safety is your main concern, chain link fences will give you the enclosure you need.

  • Aluminum fences. For pool areas or decorative fencing that is easy to care for, aluminum is a great option. Many aluminum fences can have the look of wrought iron without the high cost or maintenance. Although affordable, aluminum is also durable, lasting for many years.

Before adding a fence that you may neglect to maintain, talk to an experienced fencing installation expert that offers a variety of fencing materials. They can discuss the pros and cons of each fencing option, helping you find the right choice for your needs that will also be easy to maintain.
