NEW YORK—Greek yogurt fans can now visit the first Chobani store in the city, which opened in SoHo Wednesday.

Chobani is a popular store-bought Greek yogurt. The new Mediterranean yogurt bar will sell a variety of yogurt combinations with its Greek yogurt as the core ingredient.

“Our goal has always been to make simple, high-quality yogurt available to everyone, and Chobani SoHo will bring us one step closer to making this happen,” said Hamdi Ulukaya, president and CEO of the company.

The store is offering new flavors such as Toasted Coconut + Pineapple, which consists of toasted coconut flakes, pineapple, agave syrup, and hazelnuts; and Pistachio + Chocolate, which has Turkish pistachios, dark chocolate, honey, oranges, and mint leaves.

The company is also debuting its own water line: Water for Water. Net profits from each bottle sold go to the Shepherd’s Gift Foundation to fund clean drinking water projects. The company also gives 10 percent of its annual profits to charities worldwide through its Shepherd’s Gift Foundation.

Chobani said it aims to support local farmers by using milk from New York-area farms. All products are gluten free and Kosher certified.

Last month, Sen. Charles E. Schumer urged the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to put Greek yogurt into school lunch menus. Although Greek yogurt has higher protein, current USDA regulations for public schools consider Greek yogurt the same as regular yogurt; thus, many schools find Greek yogurt uneconomical. Schumer is urging the USDA to develop specific school lunch program guidelines for Greek yogurt.
