SAN FRANCISCO—The final Shen Yun performance at San Francisco Opera House on Jan. 8, ended in enthusiastic applause. The audience were carried away by the beauty of the Chinese traditional culture represented by Shen Yun. They were touched by the peace and harmony displayed through the performance.
“How magnificent! I was moved to tears!” said Ms. Fan Xyun, who is from China.
“We are the Chinese people. When seeing such pure traditional culture of our own like Shen Yun, and hearing the familiar accent of our hometown, I felt like going home. Gods and Buddha are the root of our Chinese culture,” she said.
“What Shen Yun tells people is the compassion of human heart. We Chinese used to stress on [the goodness of] human heart. The ancients said, ‘What goes around, comes around.’ It’s awful that many people now are not good at heart,” she said. “For example, kids nowadays are different. They are different from the past. They only know computer and video games. They play video games even when walking.”
Ms. Fan said that her children enjoy Shen Yun and she believes it can have a positive impact on them.
“Shen Yun is the best educational material for kids. It is much better than however much money parents spend on their children [for education],” she said. “A child’s heart is simple. We can teach children through watching Shen Yun. It is direct and Shen Yun’s content is very good.”
Shen Yun showcases the dance and music of China’s different ethnic peoples including the Tibetans in the Himalayas, the Han, the Manchurians of the Qing dynasty, and the Amei Indigenous people of Taiwan.
The performers include tenors, sopranos and other award-winning vocalists, who perform piano-accompanied solos.
Ms. Fan described her daughter’s reaction to the singing.
“My children especially like Shen Yun. My little girl has congenital ear problems. When she hears something loud, she always takes the hearing aids off, because she would hear something like pumping water [with the hearing aids].”
“It was unexplainable and miraculous that when she saw Shen Yun and listened to the tenors’ performances, she was just okay. And she especially likes to listen to them. After seeing Shen Yun today, she said she wants to come next time. We’ve already chosen the seat for the next time.”
