A man in central China was so desperate for money that he cut off his own finger and sent it to his parents to try and extort money from them.

Chenmou Huang, 31, from Hubei Province dreamed up the scam while drinking with two friends, and trying to figure out a way to get some cash.

First of all they pretended that Chen had raped the sister of one of the other men, and he called Chen’s mother asking for money as compensation, but she did not believe the story, fjsen.com reported.

Then the other men helped Chen amputate his index finger to send with a ransom note by courier to Mr. and Mrs. Huang, demanding 120,000 yuan (nearly $20,000) in return for their son’s freedom.

However, the parents called the police, who then tracked down Chen via the courier company. All three men are being tried for extortion.
