A Chinese man, Wang Kayui, raised two puppies for two years, but he was told by officials that they were actually black bears.

Wang, who is from the village of Yunnan, purchased the animals from a Vietnamese man while he was planting banana trees on the China-Vietnam border.
Originally, he didn’t have any idea there was anything odd about his pets. But they grew much, much quicker than dogs and displayed strange behavior patterns. For example, one of the bears killed Wang’s pet chickens, per MailOnline.

Wang later saw a pamphlet about endangered wild animals and then realized he was actually raising bears–not dogs.
Local officials said Wang’s pets were endangered Asian black bears, a male and a female. He gave them up.
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, the bears are listed as “vulnerable.”

Deforestation and hunters going after them for body parts are the reasons why the bear is threatened.
They’re not considered safe to keep as a pet as they tend to attack humans without provocation.
