The Tianjin City municipal building was hit by an explosion, with at least three people reported wounded.

Police quickly took control of the scene and the Tianjin authorities refused to provide information. Online postings about the explosion were quickly removed.

According to an Oriental Daily report, a witness of the incident posted an article at tieba.baidu.com, China’s largest BBS, saying that someone threw a homemade grenade in an attempt to attack a police sentry box.

The state-run China News interviewed an eyewitness named Mr. Chen. Chen said at around 9:30 in the morning, while he worked in a shop 20 meters (66 feet) from the spot, he heard an explosion from the direction of the government building. When he rushed out to find out what had happened, armed police had already taken control of the area.

Nearby residents told the China News reporter that three had been wounded and sent to the hospital.

Tianjin has a population of nearly 13 million and is designated one of 4 directly controlled cities—cities whose mayors are equal in status to the head of a province and are ruled directly by the Chinese regime. The other directly controlled cities are Beijing, Shanghai, and Chongqing.

An Apple Daily report called this the very first attack targeting the government compound of a municipality directly controlled by the CCP.
