Qingqing, a 13-year-old girl in China’s southwestern city of Chongqing, suffers from a strange sickness: She roars and goes into convulsions every few minutes. Her family has taken her from one doctor to another, but none have been able to help.

She is living in her uncle’s home because her father died three years ago, and her mother works far from home, according to the Chongqing Economic Times.

Her aunt, Ms. Tang, said she first noticed Qingqing’s odd condition when her niece came to live in her house two years ago. At that time, the disease manifested less strongly than now. She only produced a light hiccup sound without any convulsions.

Recently, the sound she emitted became louder and louder, and finally she began to roar. “She roars every few minutes. It is terrible, but there is nothing we can do.”

According to her aunt, as the young girl’s sickness developed, her memory and her appetite deteriorated. She has also developed an inferiority complex.

During the interview with the Chongqing Economic Times, suddenly the silent, cute, small girl leaned backward and emitted a roar while simultaneously going into a convulsion. The whole process only took four seconds. Ms. Tang explained that her niece was trying to control herself during the interview; otherwise she might have roared two more times within the space of the 10-minute interview.

The neighbors are disturbed in the stillness of the night by her thunderous roars. Even if her bedroom is closed, her aunt and uncle in the next bedroom cannot sleep.

According to her math teacher, she emits five or six roars every class period, even when she is trying her best to restrain herself.

Although her classmates and teachers have gradually become used to her condition, her roars always interrupt the concentration of others. Her math teacher also said her condition is having a negative effect on her school achievement.
