The Chinese character combination 戰爭 (zhàn zhēng) stands for war, as does the first character alone, 戰 (zhàn).

The character 甲 (jiǎ) on the bottom right-hand side of 戰 is the character for armour, while 戈 (gē) on the left-hand side refers to a halberd, spear, or lance, and is also the name of an ancient dagger-axe.

The Warring States Period (475–221 B.C.) of China, an era characterized by war, violence, chaos, and fragmentation, is referred to as 戰國時代 (zhàn guó shí dài) or simply 戰國 (zhàn guó) in Chinese.

The second character of 戰爭, 爭 (zhēng), means to fight or dispute. It is commonly used in character combinations that convey the meaning of struggling, striving, and quarreling, such as 爭奪 (zhēng duó), to struggle for or to contend; 競爭 (jìng zhēng), to compete; and 爭執 (zhēng zhí) or 爭論 (zhēng lùn), to argue, dispute, or debate.
