5.2 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Southwest China

A 5.2 magnitude earthquake has rattled China’s southwestern province of Sichuan.

The earthquake shook the Qingbaijiang District, one of 11 districts in Chengdu, which is the capital of Sichuan Province, at around 5 minutes past midnight local time on Feb. 3.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the shallow earthquake had an epicenter 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) below the surface.

China’s state-run media Xinhua reported that 150 rescuers and 34 vehicles had been dispatched to the area.

As of 2 a.m. local time on Feb. 3, there were no casualties and no reports of any buildings having collapsed.
