The Belgian town of Mouscron is offering two egg-laying hens to residents who want to reduce household waste.

A Belgian news service, lesoir.be, quoted the project director who said that “not only will people reduce their garbage by feeding the chickens kitchen scraps, they will also have the benefit of fresh eggs.” The official said the chickens are given in pairs so they do not become lonely.

This is the third time Mouscron has given out chickens—past chicken distributions were so successful that the town decided to renew the offer. Residents must agree not to eat the chickens for two years, not give them away, and must allow the city to do routine inspections to see that the chickens are treated well.
