Chicago sinkhole: A sinkhole appeared in Chicago, swallowing three cars and injured one person amid storms and heavy flooding.

Chicago Police Department spokesman Michael Sullivan told the Chicago Tribune that the sinkhole appeared in southeastern Chicago on Thursday morning.

A driver was attempting to maneuver around the hole but the ground caved underneath his vehiclce. Merko Krivokuca, the driver, was taken to the hospital with “a couple of scratches,” his father told the paper.

“It could have happened to me, I am lucky, I’m happy,” Ola Oni, whose vehicle fell into the sinkhole, told the paper. However, she was not in the car and watched it fall into the hole.

“In this kind of neighborhood I don’t think this should happen,” she said.

NBC News reported that the sinkhole was caused by a busted water main, which gushed water.

An official told the station that heavy rain could have put extra pressure on the cast iron water line, causing it to burst.

The hole spanned the entire width of the road and chewed up grassy areas abutting the sidewalk. Two of the cars that disappeared inside had been parked, but a third was being driven when the road buckled and caved in. Only the front-end of one of the vehicles could be seen peeking up along the edge of the chasm.

The driver was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, said Chicago Police Department spokesman Mike Sullivan.
