At least one person was killed and eight more were wounded in shootings across Chicago over the weekend—as temperatures plummeted well below freezing.

The lone fatal shooting took place Saturday morning in the University Village neighborhood, CBS Chicago reported. Police found a 30-year-old male slumped over inside a vehicle with a gunshot wound to the side of the head.

The most recent shooting occurred at 9:39 p.m. Sunday in the Back of the Yards neighborhood when a 21-year-old was struck by a gunfire. He was sitting inside a parked car when someone emerged from a white SUV and opened fire. The victim was taken to Stroger Hospital, and his condition was stabilized, police said.

In 2016, 780 people were murdered in Chicago—far outpacing the figures for 2015 when 495 people were shot.

According to the Chicago Tribune, so far, 10 people have been murdered in Chicago in 2017. The publication says 4,368 were shot in all of 2016 while there have been 73 shootings in 2017.

On New Year’s Day, about 25 people were shot and wounded and three were killed, ABC News reported.

The shooting incidents tend to spike during the summer months. In August 2016, Chicago, the third-largest city in the United States, suffered through its deadliest month in about 20 years, tallying 90 murders.
