Chicago Kennedy Expressway Crash: Nearly 40 Vehicles Involved in Pileup

Nearly 40 vehicles were involved a crash on Sunday afternoon, according to local reports.

About 11 people were injured in the pileup, said the Chicago Sun-Times. The crash took place in the southbound lanes near the Ohio exit.

“Vehicles are locating off at the Ohio exit,” an Illinois State Police spokesman told the paper. “And IDOT is sending off tow trucks.”

Traffic is being rerouted off the expressway at Armitage Avenue.



The Kennedy eastbound lanes between Montrose and Armitage have been shut down.

Also, all reversible lanes have been closed on the expressway, according to Illinois State Police.

Twelve people were transported to area hospitals, including one firefighter who slipped and fell, fire officials said.

Firefighters shut down all inbound traffic from Ohio as officials worked to clear the scene.

Police said that none of the injuries suffered in the crash appear to be life-threatening.
