Chevy Volt models will begin to appear on American motorways soon as General Motors officially launched the all-electric, battery-powered vehicle, according to a press statement from the company on Tuesday.

However, it will still be a couple of weeks before people can buy them.

“GM is going to lead the industry in the adoption of various vehicle electrification technologies, whether its electric vehicles with extended-range capability, like the Chevrolet Volt,” GM CEO Dan Akerson said in a statement.

Akerson added that the company wants to give consumers “energy choices other than petroleum and to make the automobile part of the solution when it comes to the environment.”

The Detroit-based automaker said that they would hire another 1,000 engineers and researchers over the next two years to develop electric vehicles other than the Volt.

The first Volt available for retail sale will be auctioned off and the proceeds will head toward funding math and sciences education at Detroit Public Schools, the company said.

“Every aspect of the Volt–from its aerodynamic shape to its battery chemistry–is a testament to the importance of math and sciences,” General Motors North America President Mark Reuss stated.

“By encouraging Detroit-area students to pursue these topics, we hope to cultivate the next generation of engineers who will build upon the Volt’s innovative technologies.”

According to the Detroit Free Press, the car’s bids are already up to $180,000, less than a day after it was announced. Bids started at $50,000, GM said.

The car is expected to sell for a retail price of around $41,000. According to GM, the Volt has a driving range of 375 miles.
