An outbreak of cholera in the central Africa country of Chad has killed 41 people, according to medical sources.

Al Jazeera reports a medical official saying that Chad reported 600 confirmed cholera cases in Chad—a landlocked nation of 10 million.

Cholera is a highly contagious disease, which causes severe dehydration, and can be fatal. It is preventable with clean water and sanitation.

The issue of clean water in Africa remains unresolved in many areas. Neighboring Cameroon and Nigeria have also recorded cases of the disease.

The Health Ministry says over 6,000 cases have been reported in Nigeria since June.

Neighboring Cameroon and Nigeria are also battling outbreaks of the fast-moving infection that causes diarrhea in victims, leading to severe dehydration and death if not treated.
