Rumors aboutCeline Dion dying have been spreading for the past several weeks, despite the Canadian singer giving interviews to the media about her new album as well as giving live performances this week. Fake reports said she died in either a plane or car crash.
The death hoax has been primarily circulated via Facebook and Twitter.
The Facebook posts claim to be from CNN and Fox News, saying “R.I.P. Celine Dion 1968 - 2013?” as well as “Her heart will go on? Celine Dion died in a car accident,” according to ContactMusic.
“Hollywood Breaking News - R.I.P Celine Dion At about 11 a.m. ET on Sunday (October 20, 2013), Celine Dion died in a plane crash. The culprit for the story is Global Associated, aka Mediafetcher. ‘Celine Dion presumed dead in private plane crash’, Global claims that Celine died today at ‘Denver Peak-Regional Airport,” reads part of the false CNN piece.
About.com later reported that the fake postings are rogue apps that can gain access to a Facebook user’s profile information and post to friends. If one accepts the terms set out in the app to see the story, it will post a false story claiming her death on a user’s Facebook wall.
On Twitter, there have still been people tweeting and retweeting “RIP Celine Dion” or questioning the singer’s death.
Over the weekend, Dion told USA Today that she is doing a new album because “I have nothing to lose. I’m just singing songs because I love them.”
“I don’t have to do anything I don’t want to do,” she said. “I’m in the greatest place. I’m 45 and in the middle of my life. I’m cruising. All the decisions I’m making are coming from a grounded place.”
Dion is slated to release “Loved Me Back To Life” on Tuesday.
