LOS ANGELES—Cedars-Sinai Medical Center was named the second-best hospital in the nation Tuesday in an annual ranking by U.S. News & World Report, while UCLA Medical Center tied for fifth place.

Cedars-Sinai was nationally ranked by the publication in 11 specialty areas, including cardiology/heart surgery; ear, nose, and throat; gastroenterology and GI surgery; geriatrics; neurology/neurosurgery; and orthopedics.

The hospital moved up in this year’s ranking. It placed sixth last year. Cedars was ranked this year as the top hospital in California and the Los Angeles area.

UCLA Medical Center was ranked third nationally last year, but this year it tied for fifth with Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. It was rated the second-best hospital in the state and Los Angeles area.

The hospital was nationally ranked in 14 adult specialties and seven children’s specialties.

Among its nationally ranked specialties were cancer; diabetes and endocrinology; ear, nose, and throat; geriatrics; obstetrics and gynecology; ophthalmology; psychiatry; and orthopedics.

The evaluation of UCLA Medical Center also includes data from Mattel Children’s Hospital.

The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, was ranked first for the seventh consecutive year. NYU Langone Hospitals in New York took third place behind Cedars-Sinai and the Cleveland Clinic was ranked fourth.

The only other California hospital in the magazine’s top 20 was Stanford Health Care-Stanford Hospital, which placed 10th.

Ranking behind Cedars and UCLA in the listing of the best hospitals in the Los Angeles area were Keck Medical Center of USC, Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach, Torrance Memorial Medical Center, UCI Medical Center, MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center, Providence Mission Hospital–Mission Viejo, and Laguna Beach, Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, Providence St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, and Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center.
