NEW YORK—U.S. health officials are revising their Zika travel warnings, saying it’s OK for pregnant women to travel to Mexico City and other destinations at high elevations.

The Zika virus is spread thought bites from a specific mosquito. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that kind of mosquito is rare above 6,500 feet (2,000 meters).

The agency has advised pregnant women to avoid travel to about three dozen countries and islands because the Zika virus is the suspected cause of a surge of birth defects in Brazil.

The CDC on Friday posted maps showing which areas in each country are above 6,500 feet. Most of the destinations in the travel warning are in Latin America or the Caribbean.
