Surf media suggest it could be the biggest wave ever surfed. Carlos Burle may have set a new surfing record after riding a wave that has been estimated to be over 100 feet tall.

The record is held by Garrett McNamara, a Hawaii native who rode a wave estimated to be about 100 feet tall.

Burle, a Brazilian surfer, caught the huge wave on Monday at Nazaré on Portugal’s central coast.

“It was luck. We never know when we will be catching the wave,” Burle told Surfer Today. “I still hadn’t surfed any wave and everyone had already had their rides.”

Maya Gabriel, a fellow surfer, had nearly drowned, and was rescued by Burle shortly before he caught the big wave.

“For me, it was a big adrenaline moment to get back there after what happened,” Burle said.
