Multimillionaire and Buffalo businessman Carl Paladino defeated former Rep. Rick Lazio in the Republican primary on Tuesday.
“We’re as mad as hell, and we’re not going to take it anymore,” Paladino said after he won, in reference to the 1976 movie Network.
Paladino won the ballot over Lazio with 62 percent of the vote. He wasn’t expected to win, but analysts say that his anti-establishment message resonated with Republicans and Tea Party backers. He has said that he will cut taxes by 10 percent if elected governor.
Paladino's Democratic rival, Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, has a much larger advantage in the polls and has already released his first campaign ad on Wednesday.
