Following a wage theft investigation by the New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, the owners of two car wash chains in New York City will have to pay workers $3.9 million in back pay.

The chains represent 21 car washes throughout the city.

Schneiderman’s office investigated the car washes for widespread labor law violations including underpayments, under reporting of employees on insurance returns, and failing to carry workers’ compensation.

The settlement was announced on Thursday.
