Atleast 22 people were killed and another 80 injured when a series of car bombs and roadside explosions took place in the Shi'ite districts of Baghdad on Tuesday.
The attacks came on the 10th anniversary of the US-led campaign in Iraq that toppled former president, Saddam Hussein.
No one has claimed the responsibility of the attacks. But they are being tied to the recent insurgency by Sunni Islamists who are tied to the Al Qaeda. The attacks are primarily to trigger sectarian tensions and undermine Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki’s Shi'ite-led government.
Security forces stepped up searches at checkpoints after the attack, closing off key roads and worsening the capital’s morning gridlock, a reporter for the AFP news agency said.
Violence has receded in recent years; since the 2003 US invasion of Iraq, but is still frequent across the country.
