Captain Awesome is now the legal name of an Oregon man after he renamed himself in honor of the character on NBC’s Chuck, according to the newspaper the Register-Guard on Wednesday.

Douglas Allen Smith Jr., a 27-year-old unemployed cabinetmaker, got the name switch officially done by a Lane County Circuit Court judge.

The name comes from character Dr. Devin Woodcomb, nicknamed “Captain Awesome” in the NBC show.

“I just thought it was really funny that Devon’s father always called him Captain Awesome, because ‘a poor nickname builds good character,’ ” Awesome said, according to the Register-Guard.

However, he did not think that he would get his new name approved in court.

“The first thing he said to me was that he thought Douglas was a perfectly honorable first name,” said Awesome, according to the Register-Guard. “I thought, ‘Oh my goodness—I’m screwed.’”

But the judge allowed him to go through with the name change.

Awesome, apparently not satisfied with just a quirky name, also changed his signature to a smiley face, a right-pointing arrow, and a left-pointing arrow.
