Candidates running for New York City office for the 2013 elections have raised $20.4 million as of July 11, within the five boroughs, according to new maps put out by the New York City Campaign Finance Board Thursday.
Candidates have taken in $10.3 million in contributions from outside New York City for a total of $30.7 million in contributions for the 2013 elections.
The number is much higher than the $14.1 million raised for the 2009 election cycle. However, the figures include contributions from candidates who fell victim to the extension of term limits in 2008.
Candidates who expected to run for offices but then did not run for those offices because they faced an incumbent were allowed to freeze their campaign contributions for the following election. Consequently, the 2013 numbers include funds raised all the way back to 2006.
With these extra contributions included, Manhattan towered above all other boroughs with $11.9 million and 21,746 contributors.
Citizens from Brooklyn, the most populated borough in the city, contributed just over $4 million with an average donation at $350 per contributor.
