Calvin Johnson broken fingers: Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson had broken fingers last year when he set the single-season receiving yards record, it was reported.

Johnson said that he was not sure when he broke his fingers and did not have surgery to fix the problem.

“The thing with a lot of football players, if you have injuries, unless you know about it, you just think it’s something that’s hurting, so you just keep on playing,” he told ESPN. Johnson said he played with his fingers taped.

He also sustained nerve damage during a game with the Minnesota Vikings, which impaired his ability to catch the ball, the network reported.

Chris McCosky of the Detroit News tweeted that Johnson said he had three broken fingers. Johnson said he is trying to straighten the fingers out.

Johnson caught 122 balls for 1,964 yards last season, besting Jerry Rice’s 1995 record. Rice had 1,848 yards for the San Francisco 49ers.

“I don’t blame any drops or anything like that on it. It’s just part of the game and had a heck of a season with it and just fortunate to be in that position,” he said.

McCosky reported earlier this year that Johnson broke his fingers but neither he or the team confirmed it.

“I am not going to comment on any of our players’ health,” Schwartz told NBC Sports months ago. “But that’s not uncommon for a wide receiver. . . . We don’t have any injury reports this time of year. And you know how I am about injuries.”
