Electronic game maker Activision announced that it would be charging a monthly fee for Call of Duty Elite, an online service to complement the highly popular Call of Duty games.
Call of Duty Elite allows users of the highly competitive electronic war game to review their plays, including past combat, use of particular weaponary, etc.
Activision said that the new service would launch alongside the next version of their Call of Duty game, called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, which would launch on November 8.
Activision said that some of the basic features of Call of Duty Elite would be free, but that more advanced features would require the monthly fee. The Ars Technica blog cited an interview with Jamie Berger, the VP of Digital with Activision, who it said was unwilling to specify a price.
Call of Duty games can be played on the Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows PCs. Call of Duty, like most games, allows players to play in single- and two-player modes, but additionally allows them to play with up to 18 players in online mode. Most other services, such as Sony’s Playstation network, charge users to play more than two users on a networked connection for most games.
Most producers of electronic games have taken to charging players for online gaming and other similar services, in an effort to increase revenue from popular games and services associated with the games.
USA Today reported that Activision has sold more than 100 million copies of the Call of Duty games.
