A woman in Northern California was severely injured after being mauled by her own dog, according to reports.

The 29-year-old woman now has life-threatening injuries, according to Fox affiliate reports, after the Tuesday morning attack.

A neighbor in Fairfield called to report hearing the woman screaming around the 1600 block of Kentucky Street. When the neighbor peered over the fence, he saw the woman being attacked by a large dog in her yard.

Officers arrived at 8:45 a.m., noticing the dog standing over the woman as she was bleeding and lying face-down.

An officer with Fairfield Police fired a shot at the dog when it charged at them. The dog died from the gunshot wound, the Fox affiliate reported.

The woman was flown to a surgical center and is now in serious condition.

Investigators said the dog attack took place when she opened a kennel that housed several dogs to feed the dog water, CBS San Francisco reported.

Neighbors told police there were about 20 dogs inside the kennel.

Fairfield Police Lt. Greg Hurlbut noted that they were a special breed of hunting dog.

Other details about the attack were not made clear.
