A California congressional lawmaker on Saturday reported that two guns have been stolen from her Los Angeles home.

Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.) said in a statement released via her campaign on Saturday afternoon that her house had been “broken into and burglarized” when she came home the night before, reported multiple outlets.

She said that “two firearms, despite being safely and securely stored, were stolen.” She said that other belongings, including cash, electronics, and other valuables, were not taken.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) was called to the scene, Bass said.

“It’s unnerving and, unfortunately, it’s something that far too many Angelenos have faced,” she said of the alleged theft.

So far in 2022, 9,836 burglaries have been reported to the LAPD—a 15 percent increase from the 8,549 burglaries reported in the same period in 2021.
Bass currently represents California’s 37th Congressional District—an area west and southwest of downtown Los Angeles. She is running for Los Angeles mayor and was endorsed by President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in August. Fellow Democrat Rick Caruso, a billionaire businessman, is also running for the position in the upcoming election.

According to Bass’s campaign website, she is the only Los Angeles mayoral candidate endorsed by the Democratic Party.

Bass’s announcement of the theft took a different tune to what she said in a mayoral debate that Fox 11 hosted earlier this year, when she said that she felt “10 out of 10 safe” when talking around Los Angeles.

The name or names under which the two allegedly stolen guns were registered under are currently not known.

The LAPD has not issued a public statement that directly referenced Bass’s home as the site of any burglary.

However, the LAPD’s media relations division has issued a notice on Twitter late on Saturday notifying of a burglary in Baldwin Vista, a neighborhood in the South region of the city of Los Angeles. It is unclear whether the notice is related to Bass’s report of firearms stolen from her home, or a separate case altogether. The Epoch Times has emailed the LAPD seeking clarification.
The notice said that police “are seeking the public’s assistance identifying a person who is suspected of a burglary” in the area. The notice reads: “On September 9, 2022, a suspect entered an unoccupied residence and removed property from the location. According to the victim, there are several valuables, electronics, and U.S. Currency in view that were not taken.”

The suspect in the notice is described as “a male, Hispanic, 5 feet and 9 inches tall, weighing 200 pounds, wearing dark clothing and a surgical mask, blue baseball cap with a white logo emblem, and black Asics sneakers.” The notice also featured a photo of the suspect taken from security cameras.
