LOS ANGELES—A speeding SUV struck and killed a woman and critically injured a man as the pair crossed a street in the Vermont Vista area of South Los Angeles, and the hit-and-run motorist was being sought Jan. 15, police said.

The crash occurred about 11:35 p.m. Sunday on Vermont Avenue around 94th Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).

“The victims were walking in a marked crosswalk westbound 94th Street at Vermont Avenue when they were struck by a silver 2023 Kia Sorento, traveling northbound Vermont Avenue,” an LAPD statement said.

“The driver failed to stop and render aid after striking the pedestrians and later abandoned the vehicle near the intersection of Vermont Avenue and 90th Street, fleeing on foot to an unknown location,” the LAPD said.

Paramedics pronounced the injured woman, in her 20s to 30s, dead at the crash scene, police said. Her name was withheld, pending notification of her relatives. The injured man was taken to a hospital in critical condition, police said.

A standing reward of up to $50,000 has been offered by the city of Los Angeles for information that helps solve a fatal hit and run.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call Detective Ryan Moreno of the LAPD South Traffic Division at 323-421-2500, or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS. Tipsters may also use the website.
