LOS ANGELES—Police Friday are investigating the circumstances surrounding the explosion of an SUV in the Van Nuys neighborhood.

Los Angeles Police Department officers were called to 7249 Van Nuys Blvd. near Sherman Way around 10:30 p.m. Thursday regarding reports of a vehicle explosion. Officers found a Toyota 4Runner had exploded and a person inside was injured.

Los Angeles County Fire personnel were called to the scene and took the victim to a hospital with unknown injuries.

According to Fox 11, a man inside the 4Runner lit a cigarette with propane tanks inside the vehicle, possibly causing the explosion.

Video from the scene showed multiple cans of butane just outside of the charred 4Runner.

The LAFD will be in charge of investigating the cause of the explosion, Los Angeles Police Officer Rosario Cervantes told City News Service.
