A shooting near the Newport Beach Pier on Feb. 28 left one man wounded and a Tesla with bullet holes, police said.

The man was sitting in his Tesla in the west Oceanfront parking lot around midnight when a gunman fired several times into the car, striking him in the shoulder, the LA Times reported.

Police said an altercation apparently preceded the shooting, the LA Times reported.

The victim drove to a gas station on Jamboree Road to call 911.

Newport Beach Police Department officers were dispatched to the station at 12:22 a.m. and found the victim with gunshot wounds and his Tesla with bullet holes.

The wounded man was taken to a hospital, where he was treated and released.

Two passengers in the Tesla were interviewed by police.

Councilman Joe Stapleton told California Insider that this type of incident is rare in Newport Beach.

“I see this as a one-off freak incident,” Mr. Stapleton said. “I’ve talked to the police and there’s no current threats to the community from what we understand right now.”

Authorities did not have a description of the suspect, but said an altercation occurred before the shooting, according to KTLA.

An investigation is ongoing.
