A 20-year-old man was killed Feb. 11 in a San Diego neighborhood after crashing his Tesla into a pole, which caused the car to go up in flames, according to authorities.

The San Diego Police Department said the crash occurred on an open roadway at 6900 Genesee Avenue at 4:23 a.m.

The driver, who was driving a 2021 Tesla Model 3, crashed into the pole after making a movement to the right of the road and then struck the curb, which caused the car to be engulfed in flames, according to news reports.

He was the only person in the car, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

“The vehicle continued forward and struck a light pole. The vehicle was fully engulfed in flames and the driver was pronounced deceased at the scene,” police said, according to a City News Service report Feb. 11.

Traffic at the scene was halted for a few hours.

Police have not yet identified the victim, and no further information has been released.

The San Diego Police Department asks anyone who has more information about the incident to contact them or call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
