Two students were involved in a stabbing Feb. 26 at Nogales High School in La Puente, about 20 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, leaving one requiring medical treatment and another detained.

Officials responded to the school, located at 401 South Nogales Street, at approximately 9:55 a.m., and found that a student had stabbed another student in the upper body during a fight in a restroom.

While trying to break up the fight, a school staff member sustained a superficial wound to a hand that did not require medical treatment, according to authorities.

The student who was stabbed was transported to a hospital with minor injuries.

“The campus was immediately placed on lockdown to ensure the safety of all staff and students while the situation was assessed,” school district officials said in a statement. “The student immediately received medical attention and the subject was taken into custody.”

Police said it would reinforce security in the area, although officials said they believe the altercation was an isolated incident.

Police urged anyone with more information to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department at (626) 330-3322. Those wishing to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers at (800)222-8477 or lacrimestoppers.org.
