A weaker U.S. dollar also contributed to higher prices for foreign merchandise at America’s ports.

August saw an unexpected rise in import prices, signaling that foreign companies chose not to lower their costs, according to new U.S. government data released on Sept. 16.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, import prices rose 0.3 percent last month from a 0.2 percent boost in July.
